What 襈 means
It names decorative edging attached to a garment.
Two Chinese dictionaries record different senses: the Yupian (玉篇), compiled about 543, gives “heavy silk”; the rhyme dictionary Guangyun (廣韻) records garment edging. Historical texts describe the trim on ritual clothing, sleeves in Goguryeo (an ancient Korean kingdom), and skirts attributed to Wa, an old name for Japan in Chinese records.
A specialized historical dress term for edging, not a name for the whole garment.
It names the trim, not the robe or skirt.
