Han Character 襘

襘 names a clothing junction, especially where a collar crosses or a belt ties. A historical Vietnamese script also uses it for “take off clothing” and “wrap,” so its meaning depends on language.

What 襘 means

It names a place where clothing meets.

The Shuowen dictionary defines 襘 as the point where a belt is tied. The Zuo Zhuan, an early Chinese historical text, uses the term in a formal-dress description with the point where a collar crosses. In 襘, 衤 signals clothing and 會 hints at its Chinese pronunciation.

Vietnamese Chữ Nôm, a historical writing system for Vietnamese, also uses 襘 for cởi (“take off clothing”) and gói (“wrap”). Those Vietnamese meanings are separate from its Chinese clothing sense.

A literary, specialist Chinese clothing term.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 襘 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
