West

西 is the Chinese character for west, and it can mean “western” in compounds. Mandarin pronounces it with a soft sibilant close to “sh,” on a high, level tone; Japanese reads it nishi on its own. A direction reply points west, while Mandarin 东西 can mean “things” or “stuff.”

What 西 means

Its basic job is to mark the western direction. In Mandarin Chinese, 西 is pronounced xī; pinyin, its Latin-letter spelling system, writes it xi. In Japanese it is nishi on its own, and can be read sei or sai in compounds. 東 means east, the directional opposite of 西.

Earlier forms appear in oracle-bone writing—inscriptions on animal bones and turtle shells—and in bronze inscriptions. The 14th–11th centuries BCE date the broader oracle-bone writing tradition, not the first surviving form of 西. One account reads an early form as nest-like and treats the west sense as a later borrowing.

The 2nd-century CE 說文解字, an early Chinese dictionary, gives a traditional bird-on-a-nest explanation linked to sunset in the west. It records an old account, not settled proof of exactly what the earliest writer meant to draw.

What does 西 mean when someone sends it?

In a direction exchange, take 西 as a literal answer: west. A note about where something lies, or a reply to “Which way?”, needs no broader symbolism. Without that setting, the surrounding words matter.

Terms such as 西域 (“Western Regions”) and 西洋 named changing western horizons from the Han through Ming periods. Some historical uses of 西洋 referred to lands west of China without including Europe. Chinese 西方 can also mean a cultural or political “West,” not a fixed list of countries.

Why does 东西 mean things?

Treat 东西 as one Mandarin word for belongings. The same word is written 東西 in traditional Chinese and means “things” or “stuff.” Its use for goods is recorded by the Tang period, but the path from “east-west” to this object sense is disputed. Two-market and five-elements explanations remain proposals, not settled history. Read it as one word rather than adding east to west.

Neutral as a direction; 西方 can also carry a political or cultural frame.

If 西方 matters to the argument, ask which countries or region the writer means.

Why does 西 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
