What 觫 means
Because 觫 is chiefly encountered in this classical fear compound.
The earliest textual witness cited for the word is the Mencius, a fourth-century BCE text from the Warring States period. In its bell-sacrifice story, King Xuan sees a cow being led to death and cannot bear its fearful trembling; Mencius treats that pity as proof of benevolence.
That dates the surviving witness, not the character's invention. Later Chinese use extends the compound to trembling people and animals; the compound is also recorded in Japanese as こくそく and Korean as 곡속. 觫 is absent from Shuowen, and as of 2026 the reviewed sources name no one-off inventor.
Literary and classical; in ordinary chat it sounds bookish, theatrical, or intentionally obscure.
For a normal “scared” reaction, use plain wording; 觫 can look like a typo or over-literary flourish.

1Questions people ask
2Why can 觫 appear as a blank box?
It can. 觫 is encoded, but your chosen font still needs a glyph for it; switch to a CJK font with coverage.
Can I use 觫 as a normal reaction?
Usually no. Its established register is literary, and most readers will meet it through 觳觫 rather than as a standalone chat symbol.
