Speech character 言

15361/20992

言 is the Chinese character for speech, words, or saying, and it serves as the speech radical in language-related characters. Its reading depends on language: Japanese uses it in 言う (“to say”), while Korean uses the Hanja form (Chinese characters used in Korean) in 言語 (“language”). In Simplified Chinese, 讠 is its shortened left-side component; standalone 言 stays full.

What 言 means

Speech, words, or saying. In Chinese, 言 can be a noun (“speech,” “words,” “statement”) or a verb (“say,” “state”). It also works as the speech radical—the component used to classify and look up many language-related characters. Japanese uses it in 言う (“to say”); Korean Hanja uses it in compounds such as 言語 (“language”). The same written character does not have one shared pronunciation across those languages.

An ancestor of 言 appears in late-Shang oracle-bone inscriptions, divination records carved on bone or shell, within a tradition dated to around 1250 BCE. These records use it in its speech sense and also for the name of a sacrifice. Bronze-vessel inscriptions continue the speech sense; later seal script, a formal style of Chinese writing, leads toward the familiar shape. The early strokes have more than one scholarly explanation, so the shape is not a settled picture of a tongue or mouth.

In Chinese phrases, 言 also helps count verse length: 七言詩 means “seven-character verse.” It is also a dictionary radical, an index category used to look up characters.

Why does 言 become 讠?

Only its side component is shortened in Simplified Chinese.

Traditional Chinese uses 訁 as the side form of the speech radical; Simplified Chinese uses 讠: 語语, 說说, 話话. The standalone character 言 stays full. Neither side form replaces 言 when it stands alone.

What if someone sends only 言?

Ask which language or word they mean.

Alone, the character does not tell you whether the sender means a Chinese word, a Japanese kanji, or Korean Hanja, and it cannot settle one pronunciation. Ask for the language or surrounding word before reading it as a command to “speak!”

Neutral as a written character; the surrounding word or sentence supplies its tone.

A lone 言 is not enough to infer a command to “speak!”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 言 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
