What 訐 means
It means accusatory exposure, not candor. 訐 is bringing another person's concealed fault into the open, often to their face. It hits harder than criticize or speak bluntly.
The Analects passage rejects counting this move as 直, moral straightness. Early dictionary explanation centers the same scene: using words to confront someone with a fault. Chinese and Japanese references still gloss it as expose, reveal, or attack what someone hid.
言 supplies the speech sense and 干 the sound. 讦 is the Simplified script counterpart, not a different word.
What if someone sends you 訐?
Treat it as a word reference, not a mood. A lone 訐 carries no target, no tone, and no joke. In study notes it usually points at the classical sense; inside a longer phrase the neighbors decide who is exposed and how hostile it sounds.
Formal and accusatory; it names exposure of hidden wrongdoing, not plain speaking.
Never use 訐 as praise for being honest or direct.
