What 訿 means
It means to criticize, disparage, or find fault. In the Han-era poem 《九思》, the line “訿玉璧兮為石” condemns calling a jade disc a stone. The doubled form 訿訿 has separate classical glosses: officials neglecting their duties, or speaking slanderously.
The earliest known attestation is in 《季庚子問於孔子》, a text written on bamboo slips in the state of Chu during the Warring States period, when rival states ruled parts of China. It discusses responses to offenses: one scholarly reading takes 少則訿之 as criticizing a minor offense; another reads 訿 there as 貲, meaning a fine.
What does 訿 mean when someone sends it?
Alone, it does not identify the sender’s tone. As of September 2026, there is no established default chat reading for 訿; ask whether the sender is quoting a text before reading it as criticism.
Classical-text register; a standalone chat message needs context.
Do not treat it as a generic criticism reaction; the sender may be quoting a text.
