Han character 誀

15489/20992

The Han character 誀 is glossed as “to entice” and separately as “disgrace.” Chinese dictionaries record the senses in different entries, so a lone 誀 does not tell you which is intended. A Cangjie input listing gives it the code YRSJ.

What 誀 means

It is glossed as “entice” and also as “disgrace.”

The 3rd-century Chinese lexicon Guangya glosses 誀 as 誘也 (“to entice”); later dictionaries Guangyun and Kangxi Dictionary preserve that sense. Kangxi Dictionary also records 辱 (“disgrace”) and connects it with 耻.

A 2025 Japanese reference entry labels 誀 hyōgai kanji, a kanji outside Japan’s designated set of regular-use characters.

Its meanings come from historical dictionaries; the intended sense depends on the sentence.

Alone, it leaves “entice” and “disgrace” unresolved.

1

Why does 誀 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
