Cantonese character 諗

諗 is a Cantonese verb meaning “think,” “consider,” or “reckon.” In messages, it marks an active thought or personal judgment. The sound is one syllable with a short “a” and final m, spoken with rising pitch; Jyutping, a way to spell Cantonese sounds, writes it nam2. Early Chinese dictionaries also record senses such as earnest warning, telling, thinking or missing, and knowing.

What 諗 means

It means “think,” “consider,” or “reckon.” Cantonese uses 諗 for working through a problem, forming a guess, or giving your view.

Placement supplies the nuance: 我諗呢個得 means “I think this will work” and gives a judgment; 你諗緊乜嘢呀 asks what someone is thinking about right now.

Why does 諗 have older meanings?

Early dictionaries record a speech-related sense. The early Chinese dictionary 說文解字 explains 諗 as “deep admonition”: earnest advice or warning, illustrated by warning a ruler. Later dictionaries also list “tell,” “think or miss,” and “know.”

That range does not prove a straight path into modern Cantonese. Comparative accounts connect the word with a related form in the neighboring Zhuang language, but do not establish which language borrowed from the other.

Why do Cantonese speakers write 諗?

It keeps a Cantonese spoken verb visible in writing. Written Cantonese uses 諗 for the everyday spoken verb “think.” Standard Written Chinese, the shared formal written norm, normally uses 想 for that job. A Cantonese reader gets the nam2 reading; someone approaching it through standard Chinese may expect a literary reading and its older dictionary senses.

Use it where readers share Cantonese-facing writing, or when you want that Cantonese voice on the page. Without that context, a reader may recognize the graph yet miss its everyday “think” sense.

Cantonese-facing and conversational; it makes a Cantonese voice visible in writing.

Without Cantonese context, readers may miss the everyday “think” sense.

Why does 諗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
