What 諱 means
A revered personal name, or the rule against saying it. In classical Chinese, 諱 can refer to the name itself, the act of avoiding it, or a matter left unspoken. Its targets included a ruler, close ancestor or parent, and exemplary sage.
In early classical texts, 名 refers to a living person's name, while 諱 marks a dead person's name. The practice served reverence and social order, then became a system for avoiding names in speech and writing. Scribes could substitute a character, omit it, change its pronunciation, or remove a stroke.
Here, 諱 points to a tabooed personal name, a historical naming formula, or the practice of 避諱; it is not simply a formal synonym for “name.”
Why does 諱 change across East Asian sources?
The tradition traveled, but each language kept its own emphasis. In Chinese historical prose, 諱 is tied to the personal name treated with restraint. The formula X諱Y identifies Y as X's personal name.
In premodern Japan, imina became a label for a person's real or personal name, distinct from the posthumous title 諡. Its history is contested: some scholarship treats imina as a wider East Asian custom, while Motoori Norinaga argued it was a Chinese import absent from ancient Japan.
In Korean historical usage, hwi can mean the revered name itself or the act of not saying or writing it, especially for rulers, ancestors, or the dead. The same graph can therefore cue a name, a prohibition, or a formal label.
Can I send 諱 by itself?
Only when the message is already about naming or name-taboo. Alone, 諱 reads as a specialist historical term, not a general-purpose reaction; add context for readers unfamiliar with classical Chinese or East Asian naming terms.
If the point is simply that a name is private, say that in ordinary words. 諱 names a historical convention, not secrecy in general.
Formal and historical, with a note of reverence; in ordinary chat it reads like a reference term, not warmth or a general reaction.
諡 is a posthumous title; 諱 concerns a personal name and the restraint around it.

1Why does 諱 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
