What 謓 means
Mainly anger or resentment; also, derisive laughter.
謓 can mark anger or resentment. In 謓笑, it carries a cold, mocking laugh: the laugh is derisive, not cheerful.
What does 謓 mean when someone sends it?
Read it as a rare character to interpret, not a ready-made reaction.
Sent alone, its two recorded senses do not settle whether it means anger or a mocking laugh; the surrounding words decide. A different font may draw its strokes differently, while the character remains 謓.
Where did 謓 come from?
An early written record appears in the Eastern Han dictionary 《說文解字》. It glosses 謓 as 恚 (anger or resentment) and analyzes its written components as 言, the speech component, and 眞. It also preserves Jia Shizhong's separate note 謓笑 for a derisive laugh. The entry treats 謓 as a written word for anger, not a picture of an emotion.
Later dictionary traditions keep both senses. CUHK's dictionary records separate Cantonese readings for anger and derisive laughter; Taiwan's Ministry of Education lists 謓 as a variant of 嗔. Older dictionary glosses also connect 瞋 with the anger sense.
Rare and dictionary-like; in casual chat it reads as a character under discussion, not a normal reaction.
Don't assume a laugh is cheerful; the recorded laugh is derisive.
