Simplified Chinese character 诞

15839/20992

In Chinese, 诞 can mean birth or absurdity/falsehood depending on its compound. In 生民, a poem in the Book of Songs (詩經), an early Chinese poetry collection, older explanations differ: “great” or a word that starts the phrase.

What 诞 means

The compound decides. 诞生 means birth; 荒诞 and 怪诞 describe absurdity, while 诞妄 means false or unreasonable. Alone, 诞 is ambiguous.

The pre-Qin poem 生民 tells Hou Ji’s ritual origin story; he is a legendary figure associated with farming. Traditional explanations differ: one calls 诞 “great”; another says it starts the phrase.

Why did my keyboard give me 誕?

It is the traditional Chinese form. Chinese input methods use 誕 for Traditional Chinese and 诞 for Simplified Chinese; Japanese also writes this character as 誕.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 诞 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
