What 读 means
读 means “read”; in some words, “study.”
Mandarin pinyin dú sounds roughly like “doo,” with a rising tone. In 句读, 读 is dòu (“doh,” falling), for a pause between clauses in classical Chinese.
The early dictionary Shuowen glosses 讀 as “reciting books,” an older reading-aloud sense.
