What 谽 means

A deep, open hollow in a valley.

Chinese dictionaries gloss 谽谺 as the great hollow within a valley. Sima Xiangru uses the pairing in 上林賦, a descriptive poem from the Han dynasty. Dictionaries also list 岈 as an alternate written form of 谺.

Why does 谽 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
