What 豎 means
It describes making something stand or a vertical calligraphy stroke.
In compounds, 豎立 means “set upright” and 豎起 means “raise.” In calligraphy, 豎筆 names the downward stroke, contrasted with 橫, the horizontal stroke. Classical and literary texts also use 豎 for a young household servant or junior palace attendant.
Records include bronze inscriptions and manuscripts from the ancient state of Chu dating to the late Warring States period in China, when rival states still competed. Later forms appear in seal and clerical scripts, historical styles of Chinese writing. Its early role was to write the word for setting something upright.
Is 豎 the same as 竖 or 竪?
They are related forms; the preferred form depends on the script tradition.
竖 is the simplified Chinese counterpart of 豎. Japanese reference works use 竪 as the standard printed form and list 豎 as its variant. The forms share their core lexical sense, so follow the writing convention of the surrounding text.
How do I type 豎?
Use a Chinese input method and select 豎.
With Mandarin Pinyin input, a system that spells Mandarin with Latin letters, enter shu4; the 4 marks the falling tone. With Zhuyin, the Mandarin phonetic-symbol system, enter ㄕㄨˋ. Select 豎 from the candidates. Because 竖 shares its Mandarin reading, the list may offer the simplified form, so check the selected character.
The upright and calligraphy senses are neutral; the servant sense is historical or literary.
In simplified Chinese, use 竖 unless the source specifically requires 豎.

1Why does 豎 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
