What 貀 means
A historical Chinese name for a beast said to have no forelegs.
The Erya (《爾雅》), an early Chinese dictionary, gives the earliest known gloss: “貀,无前足” (“貀 has no forelegs”). Shuowen (《說文解字》) agrees and analyzes 貀 as 豸, an animal-related component, plus 出, its sound component. Later commentaries compare the beast to a dog, a leopard-marked creature, a black tiger, a raccoon-like animal from Korea, or a sea creature.
