貲

CJK Unified Ideograph-8Cb2

貲 is an old Chinese character for a fine paid in property, and later for value, property, or wealth. Its documented life runs from Qin and Han legal language into classical compounds and Japanese terms such as 貲布. If someone sends 貲 alone, read it as a classical or specialist reference, not an emoji reaction.

What 貲 means

It began as a fine paid to redeem a penalty.

The clearest dated evidence is the Shuihudi Qin legal slips, deposited around 217 BCE. They use 貲 when labor duties go wrong: 貲一盾 was one shield, and 貲一甲 one suit of armor.

Shuowen defines it as a small punishment redeemed with property and cites a Han rule replacing corvée with payment. The sources checked for this page name no single inventor or defensible earlier date as of 2026-09-08.

Why can 貲 mean wealth or value?

Its penalty sense widened into worth, property, and capital.

After the legal sense, 貲 widened toward worth and assets. Shuowen analyzes the graph as 貝 plus phonetic 此; later accounts list price, property, capital, and the related wealth use of 資.

Japanese usage preserves another branch: 貲布 names a coarse hemp cloth. The cited Engishiki record dates that cloth as tribute in 927; later Japanese sources place it in garments, bags, screens, and other everyday uses. There 貲 belongs to a material term, not a fine.

What does 貲 mean when someone sends it?

Treat a lone 貲 as context-dependent classical writing.

A lone 貲 does not settle the reading. With legal objects it points to a fine; beside 財 or 產 it points to assets; in a valuation phrase it points to worth or amount. Read the neighboring words before choosing an English gloss.

Readers across script standards may meet 貲 and 赀 as traditional and simplified forms, while 資 is a separate but historically related wealth form. A font draws the glyph, so an odd or boxed display is a font problem, not a new meaning.

Classical, archival, or specialist; using 貲 instead of 赀 can look deliberately traditional.

Do not guess money from the shape alone; read the surrounding compound first.

Questions people ask

2

Is 貲 the same as 赀?

Yes. 貲 is the traditional form and 赀 is its simplified counterpart; the surrounding language still determines the sense.

Will every device show 貲 the same way?

No. A font draws the glyph, so unsupported or fallback fonts can change its appearance or show a missing-glyph box.
