What 賽 means
It means a contest in Chinese; its older use was ritual thanks.
Chu script, used by the state of Chu during China's Warring States period, preserves the earliest known form. The dictionary Shuowen Jiezi glosses 賽 as “repay.”
By the Northern Wei period, 賽 also meant a contest; Chinese keeps that sense in 賽跑. Japanese uses the older ritual sense in 賽銭, money offered at a shrine or temple. 賽銭 appears in records in the late 16th century, after 散銭 in the early 15th century.
