Character 贈

贈 means to give, present, or bestow something. In Chinese and Japanese it usually appears inside a compound that tells you whether the act is a gift, a formal presentation, an exchange, or a transfer. Older uses also describe sending away ill omens and bestowing honors after death.

What 贈 means

贈 marks something being handed over or conferred. In Chinese it appears in words for giving or presenting; in Japanese, 贈る means “to give.” The surrounding word identifies the situation: a present, a ceremony, an exchange, or another transfer.

An early Japanese etymological account links its form on ancient bronze inscriptions (writing cast on vessels) to a ritual called 曾, later associated with 堂贈. The old Chinese dictionary 《說文》 glosses 贈 as sending valuable goods. Classical sources also use it for rites meant to send away bad dreams and other ill omens; later Chinese records use it for honors bestowed after death.

What changes when 贈 appears in a compound?

The next character tells you what kind of giving is meant. 贈送 describes giving something away; 贈呈 is a formal presentation; 贈答 is reciprocal giving, including exchanges of gifts, letters, or poems; and 贈與 can refer to a property transfer. In farewell language, 贈言 treats words as something bestowed.

Graphically, 贈 combines 貝, a shell sign linked with valuable goods, and 曾, the sound-bearing part. The compound, rather than the shape alone, tells you what kind of transfer is happening.

Can 贈 stand alone in a message?

It names giving, but it does not tell you the occasion. If it arrives alone, treat it as a quoted character, label, or fragment until the surrounding Chinese or Japanese wording supplies the context; by itself it does not mean thanks, farewell, donation, or acceptance.

Japanese fonts may draw the right-hand component as 曽 instead of 曾. That typographic form still represents 贈.

A written giving term: ordinary in gift words, formal in presentations or property transfers, and solemn in condolence or posthumous honors.

贈賄 means bribery; 贈 does not make every transfer generous.
