Chinese character 贞

It shifts from divination to ideas of uprightness, loyalty, and chastity.

Late-Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—questions recorded on turtle shell or animal bone for divination—show the old use around 1200 BCE. Some scholars translate the old verb as “test” or “verify,” rather than simply “ask.” The early graph borrowed 鼎, a character for an ancient vessel, because their ancient pronunciations were close.

Later usage carried the idea of correctness into moral language. Modern dictionary usage includes steadfastness, loyalty, and chastity or sexual purity; the last sense invokes a traditional standard applied especially to women.

Does 贞 mean chaste or loyal?

Both readings are real; the surrounding word decides.

In 忠贞, it means loyal and steadfast; in 贞洁 or 贞操, it points to chastity or sexual purity. In a classical quotation, it may instead refer to divining or testing a proposed action.

Sent alone, 贞 is ambiguous: it could be a clipped word or a classical reference. Avoid using it alone to call someone “chaste”; that can sound like a gendered moral judgment.
