What 贯 means
Usually: pass through, connect, or carry something through. The early form is a picture of strung shells or coins; it named both the string and the money counted on it.
Chinese compounds carry that thread into coherent language, ancestral home, and carrying an idea through. Japan's 貫 keeps the same piercing, lineage, custom, and old currency and weight senses. For 贯 or 貫, it is one character: 贯 is simplified, 貫 is traditional.

1Why does 贯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
