What 赁 means
Renting, leasing, or hiring; older usage also meant hired work.
Its early forms appear in bronze inscriptions and Chu manuscripts from the Warring States period. Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, defines 賃 as “to hire”; later dictionaries also record hired work and its pay.
The character combines 贝, the simplified form of the money-related component 貝, with 任 as its sound cue. Modern Chinese uses it in 租赁 (“renting or leasing”), 赁房 (“housing rental”), and 赁车 (“vehicle rental”).
Transactional vocabulary for renting, hiring, and wages.
It concerns paid use or work, not ownership.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 赁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
