Simplified Chinese character 赐

16209/20992

赐 means to bestow or grant, traditionally from someone of higher rank to someone below. In modern Chinese it has a formal or literary feel; 赐教 turns that hierarchy into a courteous request for advice. In historical writing, 赐死 refers to a ruler ordering a subject to commit suicide.

What 赐 means

It marks a formal bestowal from someone with authority. 赐 means to grant or bestow, usually from a superior to someone below. Its object can be land, an office, status, money, or a favor; beside the everyday verb for “give,” it sounds elevated.

Bronze inscriptions using 賜 appear by the late Western Zhou. They are writings cast into ritual vessels and other objects, recording public acts such as decrees, land transfers, appointments, and awards. Later examples appear in manuscripts from the ancient Chu state, on Qin-era bamboo slips (narrow strips used for writing), and in the small-seal style shown in the Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary.

The Shuowen defines 賜 as “to give” and notes that 錫 can stand for 賜 in classical passages. Korean Hanja—Chinese characters used in Korean—also retains 賜 in formal compounds: 下賜 means a formal grant, and 賜姓 means granting someone a surname.

What does 赐教 mean?

It politely asks the other person to teach or advise you. 赐教 treats the addressee’s instruction as a favor bestowed on the writer. It fits a formal letter, discussion, or courteous online exchange; in very casual chat, it can sound ceremonious or deliberately literary.

Read it as respect, not as an order. An ordinary answer or explanation is enough.

Why do I see 賜 instead?

赐 is simplified; 賜 is traditional. They are forms of the same character and carry the same meaning. A switch between them reflects the writing system being used, not a change in the word.

Formal and hierarchical, with a literary or historical feel; it is not the neutral everyday verb for “give.”

Check the compound: 赐死 is a death order, not a generous gift.
