Red (Han character)

赤 is the Chinese and Japanese character for “red.” In compounds it can carry meanings beyond color, and a message containing only 赤 gives little clue to the sender’s intent.

Text symbol

What 赤 means

It usually means “red”; a compound can change the sense. In Japanese, this red kanji is read あか (a-ka) for the color; Mandarin Chinese pronounces it chì, roughly “chee” with a falling pitch.

Chinese compounds also use 赤 for wholehearted sincerity or for being bare or empty. Japanese compounds extend it into correction, accounting, signals, and emphasis. The character is shared, but the surrounding word determines which established sense fits.

What if someone sends only 赤?

A lone 赤 doesn’t reveal the sender’s mood. “Red” is a safe starting point only if the conversation has set up a color choice or something red to describe. Otherwise, check whether the message is Chinese or Japanese and read the full expression.

Where does 赤 come from?

Its ancestor is an early Chinese written form. An ancestor of 赤 appears in oracle-bone inscriptions, early Chinese writing carved on animal bones and turtle shells, around 1250–1000 BCE. It is commonly interpreted as a person with fire, linking the early color sense to fire’s red glow.

Across later Chinese writing styles—from bronze forms through seal, clerical, and regular script—the drawing shifted toward 大 above 火. These labels describe the shapes it came to resemble; they do not mean that modern 赤 is read as the separate words “big” and “fire.”

The color reading is ordinary; Japanese shorthand and compounds can make 赤 political, technical, or emphatic.

Calling someone 赤 in Japanese can label them communist; use it only when you mean the politics.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 赤 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
