What 躋 means
It means to ascend or move upward.
The old Chinese dictionary 《說文解字》 analyzes it as 足, a foot component, plus 齊 for sound, and glosses it as “to ascend.” A bronze form appears on the 洹子孟姜壺, a ritual vessel. One dating places the vessel in 694 BCE; another places it in the late Spring and Autumn period.
Classical examples describe a road as steep and rising, or someone climbing into a hall. Chinese usage extends this upward motion to entering a rank or achievement level. Japanese references give the reading のぼる, meaning “to climb.” Some classical commentaries interpret 躋/隮 as falling or being brought down, so the surrounding line matters.
Why are 躋 and 擠 confused?
They sound alike in Cantonese, but their meanings differ.
Both contain 齊, but 躋 means to ascend, while 擠 means to squeeze, crowd, or push. The established phrase for entering a rank is 躋身; 擠身 changes the image to being squeezed in.
Use 躋身 to describe entering a rank
Use 躋身 when a sentence is about reaching a group, rank, or level. It is formal written Chinese; a plainer word for “enter” or “rise” sounds less literary in casual messages. If someone sends 躋 by itself, start with “rise” or “ascend”; the surrounding words show whether the movement is physical or about status.
Literary and formal; it names ascent precisely and can extend to advancement into a rank.
Do not write 躋身 as 擠身: the second suggests being squeezed in.

1Why does 躋 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
