What 轅 means
It means the long pole, or pair of shafts, joining a cart to its draft animals.
Research on Bronze-Age Chinese chariots identifies 轅 as the draft pole; names for vehicle parts varied by region.
The components help explain the character: 車 signals the vehicle sense, while 袁 supplies the sound. Shuowen, an early Chinese character dictionary compiled by Xu Shen (A.D. 30–124), glosses 轅 as 輈, another term for a carriage shaft.
Why does 轅 mean a gate in 轅門?
轅門 turns the cart shafts into an entrance. In the early Chinese ritual and government text Zhouli, two raised carriage shafts facing each other form the entrance to a ruler’s temporary camp. The compound later means a military camp gate and then an official outer gate.
軒轅 is a historical name for the legendary Yellow Emperor and also a constellation name. Older sources also use 轅 for a surname, a place, or a verb meaning “to change”; those are context-dependent senses.
Historical and classical; it appears more in compounds, names, and traditional-script text than as a casual standalone character.
In 轅門, read it as part of “camp gate,” not as a literal shaft.
