What 轓 means
轓 names a protective panel fixed to a carriage’s side. Made of matting or leather, it kept dust and mud off riders.
The earliest recorded Warring States form of 轓 appears in a manuscript from the state of Chu, labelled 曾75. A stone inscription from the Eastern Han, a later period of the Han dynasty, shows it in clerical script, an older formal writing style.
Under Han rules, red panels and the side on which they appeared marked carriage rank. Later, 轓 could mean the whole carriage or the high-ranking passenger it carried.
Archaic and specialized; it belongs in classical Chinese and historical writing.
Do not assume every use means the whole carriage; its concrete referent is the side panel.
