What 辢 means
The older form was 剌, reshaped under the influence of 辛.
Dunhuang manuscripts copied in the early-to-mid Tang use 辢 in 辛辢, placing this spelling’s emergence around the Sui–Tang transition. An early Chinese character dictionary, the Shuowen Jiezi, records the older form as 瘌; 辣 later became the usual spelling.
Rare and historical; 辣 is the ordinary modern Chinese spelling.
Outside an old text, 辢 may look like a typo for 辣.

1Why does 辢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
