What 进 means
It marks inward or forward movement. Ancient bone-divination inscriptions show an ancestor of 進. Its bird-and-foot form is read as a bird stepping forward; some early uses mean presenting offerings. Inscriptions on Western Zhou bronze vessels add 辵, a movement component; 進 also means recommending people or presenting laborers. Texts on bamboo strips from Chu use it for advancing.
Neutral Chinese writing; script form signals spelling convention, not attitude.

1Why does 进 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
