In older Chinese, 迵 means “pass through” or “open a route.” A Warring States Chu text uses it for Yu’s water project; a separate siege passage has two competing readings.

What 迵 means

It describes passage or a route opened.

A Chu text on bamboo slips (narrow bamboo strips used for writing) says Yu directed three rivers and five lakes east to the sea. Later dictionaries gloss 迵 as 通达, “reach through.”

In another siege passage, scholars dispute whether 迵 means driving enemies back or names captured workers sent home.
