What 遉 means
It has a Chinese spying sense and several Japanese readings.
In Chinese, 遉 is an old variant of 偵, whose senses include spying, reconnaissance, and detective work. In Japanese, it can be read うかがう (“to inquire or investigate”) or さぐる (“to probe”); it is also an uncommon spelling of さすが (“as expected” or “even so”). Its earliest attestation is in a late Western Zhou inscription on the bronze vessel 無叀鼎. There, the graph is read as 貞 in a royal appointment record naming a “tiger official” and describing the front and side directions. That inscriptional reading is distinct from the later Chinese connection to 偵 and spying.
When does 遉 mean Japanese さすが?
In Japanese, 遉 is an uncommon spelling of さすが.
Japanese さすが and さすがに can mean “as expected” or “even so”; さすがの can also single out someone impressive, even as an exception. The ending matters: 遉に works adverbially, while 遉の introduces the person or thing being judged.
Rare and literary in Japanese; an old Chinese variant of 偵.
In Japanese, do not assume the Chinese spying sense; read the form and sentence around 遉.

2Questions people ask
1Why is 遉 a blank box for me?
The character has not changed; a blank box means your current font lacks a glyph for it. A Taiwanese character-font record from 2024 lists 遉 and says Windows 10 and later include a default glyph, though display depends on the font in use.
