What 遭 means

遭 means to encounter, often with an unwelcome result. In Mandarin, 遭遇 means “encounter,” 遭受 means “suffer or undergo,” and 周遭 means “surroundings.”

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary completed in 121 CE, explains 遭 as “meet”: 辵 signals movement and 曹 supplies the sound.

In Mandarin, 遭 gives an encounter an adverse cast.

For a routine meeting, 遭 can sound like bad news.

Why does 遭 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
