What 郈 means
It names an ancient place in Lu, in present-day Shandong.
The earliest evidence found here is a Spring and Autumn period place-name. Early dictionaries place it in Dongping's Wuyan township; later records call it a Shusun fief. Its job was to write a locality name, not express a feeling.
It later marked a family name, including 郈昭伯. Historical records connect that surname with 后 and 厚 spellings; preserve 郈 in names and quotations.
Historical and formal; if it appears as a box, your font lacks the glyph.
Do not normalize 郈 to 后 or 厚 in a name.

1Why does 郈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
