From a state near Chengwu in Shandong, China. Tradition says a son of King Wen of Zhou, a ruler from early Chinese history, received the state. The state of Song conquered it during the Spring and Autumn era. The state name became a surname; 郜鼎 was a bronze vessel used in ceremonies.
