What 酕 means
酕 means “very drunk,” usually as part of 酕醄.
The usual form is the literary Chinese compound 酕醄, pronounced in Mandarin with two rising tones (pinyin: máo táo). Sent alone, 酕 may look like a fragment; the compound makes the intoxication meaning clearer.
The earliest dictionary trail is in the Northern Song rhyme dictionaries Guangyun and Jiyun; the earlier Shuowen Jiezi does not list 酕. Later verse preserves the same sense, and a Qing calligraphy work dated 1704 also records 酕醄. In the character's construction, 酉 supplies the wine association and 毛 contributes the sound.
Formal and literary; it belongs in writing or quotation, not ordinary chat.
A lone 酕 can look unfinished; 酕醄 makes the intended meaning clearer.

1Why does 酕 show as a box?
It can. A font without 酕 may show a missing-glyph box or a fallback glyph; that changes the display, not the character's identity or meaning.
