The early dictionary explanation is 酒樂, pleasure in wine: 酉 signals alcohol and 甘 carries the sound. As of 2026, checked sources show no oracle-bone or bronze attestation for this form.

Later use extends that fullness to merriment, intoxication, battle, sleep, and rich color. Read the compound around it; 酣 alone rarely fixes the meaning.
