What 釀 means

Type niang, select the fourth-tone candidate, or use Cangjie.

For Cangjie, the documented sequence is 一田卜口女. In a Traditional Chinese IME, enter niang and choose 釀 rather than simplified 酿. Japanese input normally offers 醸 for the modern form, while 釀 is its historical form.

What does 釀 mean?

It means to brew or ferment, then to let something develop.

The character combines 酉, associated with alcohol, with 襄 as its sound component. Its earliest evidence defended here is the Eastern Han dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, where it names making wine; that records a word sense, not a single inventor. Later Chinese uses add "wine" as a noun and "gradually bring about" for plans, weather, or trouble.

Why can 釀 mean “cause”?

Fermentation became a metaphor for slow formation.

That shift appears in 醞釀, “develop or prepare,” and 釀成大禍, “bring about disaster.” In Japanese, the related modern form 醸 appears in 醸す, which can mean creating an atmosphere or stirring controversy. 酿 is the simplified Chinese form; 醸 is the Japanese shinjitai form.

Written and lexical: it usually belongs inside a Chinese word or Japanese compound, not as a standalone reaction.

Do not read every occurrence as alcohol: in 釀成大禍, it means gradually bring about disaster.

Why does 釀 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
