What 里 means
It depends on the language and word around it. In Mandarin Chinese, the Pinyin reading is lǐ; 里 can mean inside, a neighborhood or native place, a local administrative area, or a distance. In Japanese, readings include sato for a settlement, countryside, or family home and ri for distance. A numeral before 里 signals a distance unit, whose length varies by country and period.
Where does 里 come from?
Its oldest known form appears in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions. The graph combines 田 (“field”) and 土 (“earth”), traditionally explained as cultivated land where people could settle. Bronze inscriptions use 里 for settlements and, in later examples, for distance and as a stand-in for 裏 (“inside”). Later records in Chu manuscripts and seal script show the written form changing.
里 also named local administrative units. In Tang China, 里 and 乡 were paired community units, and Japan adapted a related administrative model. In 715, Japan renamed the earlier 里 units 郷 and placed smaller 里 units beneath them. Those links connect 里 with 乡 and 郷 through administration, not just through their meanings for places.
What does 里 mean in a text?
Ask for the language or full sentence if you received only 里. By itself, it does not tell you whether to read “inside,” a home or settlement, or distance. Translate the compound: 故里 means “hometown,” while 里帰り refers to returning to one’s family home in Japanese. “Village” is one possible meaning, not a safe default.
里 is ordinary written vocabulary; the sentence supplies its tone and sense.
Do not translate every 里 as “village”; Chinese compounds also use it for “inside.”

1Why does 里 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
