What 釔 means
It names yttrium in Traditional Chinese.
An 1871 chemistry book from the Qing dynasty, China's last imperial dynasty, 《化學鑑原》, paired foreign-name sounds with radicals (character parts marking a class). In 釔, 釒 marks metal and 乙 hints at sound. Yttrium takes its name from Ytterby, a Swedish village: a mineral was found there in 1787; chemist Gadolin reported a new “earth” (then a term for oxide) in 1794; Wöhler isolated the metal in 1828; Mosander separated three oxides in 1843.

1Why does 釔 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
