釜 (cooking cauldron)

釜 means a deep cooking pot or cauldron. In Chinese compounds it can signal total commitment or a root-cause fix; Japanese compounds use it for pot-cooked rice and an idiom about people bound by shared meals. Chinese and Japanese fonts may draw the same Han character differently.

What 釜 means

It means a deep pot used for cooking or heating water. A pottery cauldron-and-stove set from China's Yangshao culture, a prehistoric farming culture, is dated to 4,000–3,500 BCE. The pot sat on its stove to boil or steam food.

Bronze records from China's Warring States period, when rival states fought for power, show 釜 as both a cooking vessel and a measure of capacity. Its early written form paired a pot component with 父 as a sound clue; the familiar form with 金 (“metal”) came later.

In Japan, iron 釜 were used by the Nara period. Japanese reference works trace metal 釜 to 鼎, an ancient Chinese three-legged cooking vessel. By the Kamakura period, tea culture had brought dedicated kettles made for preparing tea.

What does 釜 mean in a message?

The surrounding compound can turn a pot into a metaphor. In Chinese, 破釜沉舟 means committing with no retreat: its story has soldiers break their cooking pots and sink their boats. 釜底抽薪 means solving a problem at its source—the image is taking the firewood out from under the pot.

Japanese 釜飯 is seasoned rice cooked and served in a small pot. In current Japanese usage, 同じ釜の飯を食う describes people bonded by having shared meals and daily life.

Why does 釜 look different in Japanese text?

A font can change the drawing without changing the character.

This is a font-rendering difference: regional glyph conventions can change how the same Han character is drawn without changing its identity. A Japanese-localized font may use a form unlike a Chinese or generic font; check the text's language and font context before calling it a typo.

Bare 釜 names a cooking vessel; the surrounding language determines how to read it.

Without surrounding words, don't guess which language's reading the sender intended.
