What 釯 means
In Chinese, 釯 means the sharp point at a blade’s end. It is a specialized variant of 鋩; dictionaries also use the word for any pointed tip and for a gleam.
The early Chinese dictionary 《說文解字》 does not list 鋩; later references such as 《玉篇》 and rhyme dictionaries do. Rhyme dictionaries group characters by sound and rhyme.
Why can 釯 mean “ring”?
In Vietnamese Nôm, 釯 can write vòng or vồng. Nôm is a traditional Vietnamese writing system that uses Chinese characters and related forms to write Vietnamese.
A text from 1898 uses 釯 in passages about a jade ring and a worn ring. Read the surrounding Vietnamese: the Chinese blade-point sense does not apply here.
In Chinese writing, 釯 is a specialized variant of 鋩, not the usual form.
A Vietnamese ring reading does not carry over into Chinese.
