What 鈍 means
It marks a lack of sharpness, speed, or mental quickness.
The earliest evidence verified here is the Shuowen Jiezi entry presented in 121 CE. It defines 鈍 through 錭 and analyzes the character as 金 plus the sound-bearing component 屯. That is a dictionary attestation, not proof that 121 CE was the first time anyone wrote it.
The design points to a practical metalworking distinction: a blade or tool that does not cut well. Later Chinese and Japanese dictionary traditions carry that physical sense into slower action, weaker response, and a dull mind.
Why can 鈍 sound insulting?
Aimed at a person, it can land as “dull” or “stupid.”
Calling someone 鈍 moves the word from a measurable property of a tool to a judgment about the person. Read it as criticism unless the message clearly frames it as self-description or wordplay.
The split is also linguistic. Japanese dictionaries pair 鈍 with readings such as nibui and with compounds including 鈍感 and 鈍痛; Chinese sources record the traditional form 鈍 alongside simplified 钝. The character travels across the Sinosphere, but the local word around it controls the reading.
What changes when 鈍 appears in a compound?
The word beside it tells you what has gone dull.
With 刀 or 器, the target is an edge or weapon; with 感, it is sensitivity or awareness; with 痛, it is the quality of pain. In older literary usage, 鈍 can also describe clumsy speech or an unfavorable turn, so a bare character is less precise than a compound.
屯 is a structural neighbor, not a synonym: it supplies the sound in the traditional analysis. The simplified Chinese form 钝 is a script counterpart, not a new reading of the basic idea.
Technical for an edge or pain; pointed and potentially insulting when it describes someone's mind or reactions.
Calling a person 鈍 can land as “stupid,” not merely “slow.”

1Is 鈍 safe to send to a person?
Not without context. It can judge someone as dull, foolish, or slow-witted, so use a neutral phrase if you mean delayed or inattentive.
