In chemistry, 鉿 means hafnium.
釒 marks metal; 合 hints at the Mandarin reading hā. Chinese element names pair a metal component with a sound clue. Hafnium was identified in zirconium ore in Copenhagen in 1923 and named after Hafnia, the Latin name for Copenhagen. Chinese chemical nomenclature listed it as 鉿 by 1932.
Premodern dictionaries also use 鉿 for a penetrating sound or a metal bar about two chi long, a traditional Chinese measure of length. Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, does not list it.
