What 銾 means
銾 is a rare variant of 汞, the Chinese character for mercury. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education’s 2024 character-variant dictionary says 銾 is absent from the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, and listed in the later Jiyun; it also records “bell sound.”
Older Chinese medical and alchemical texts connect 汞 and 水銀 (“water silver”) with 丹砂, cinnabar, a red ore containing mercury; they also describe mercury in gilding and elixir-making. This is mercury’s history, not proof that 銾 itself was the ancient spelling.
A rare, dictionary-like form; use 汞 for an ordinary mercury reference.

1Why does 銾 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
