What 鋛 means
鋛 is a variant of 礦, the Chinese character for ore or a mineral deposit.
The earliest records for this variant family appear in medieval Chinese dictionaries: Longkan Shoujian (997) and Guangyun (1007–1008).
Should I use 鋛 or 礦?
Use 礦 or 矿 in ordinary Chinese; retain 鋛 when the exact variant matters.
Taiwan's Ministry of Education groups 鋛 with 礦 in its variant dictionary, and 鑛 is another form in the same family. In a quotation or transcription, replacing 鋛 changes the source's exact spelling; in new Chinese prose, it can look like an error.
A 2024 CNS11643 record says Windows 10 and later include 鋛 by default. Its visible shape can still depend on font coverage.
Source-sensitive: 鋛 reads as a variant form, so it fits quotations and exact reproductions better than new everyday prose.
In fresh Chinese prose, it may look like a typo.

2Questions people ask
2Why does 鋛 sometimes show as a box?
It can. A font without this Han character may show a missing-character box or use a fallback font. Select a CJK font that includes the character.
Can I use 鋛 instead of 礦 in ordinary Chinese?
Usually no. Write 礦 in traditional Chinese or 矿 in simplified Chinese. 鋛 is a variant listed with 礦, so retain it when an exact source uses it.
