錡, called qi, is an old Chinese character for a cauldron-like three-legged pot or a chisel-like cutting tool. It shows up in Classical Chinese quotations and names, not as a chat reaction.

Text symbol

What 錡 means

A classical metal vessel or cutting tool. Dictionaries also record weapon, crossbow-stand, and surname senses for qi.

As of 2026, no single inventor or first inscription is defensible here; transmitted Classic of Poetry passages pair it with an axe and with a pot. With 斧, read the tool or weapon sense; with 釜, read cookware.

The traditional form pairs 金 for metal with 奇 for sound. In simplified Chinese it is written 锜.

Classical and technical; expect it in a quotation, historical text, name, or specialist reference.

A lone 錡 does not mean cauldron: tool and weapon senses also exist.

Why does 錡 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
