What 錳 means
In Chinese chemistry, 錳 labels the element Mn.
In 1868, one chemistry text used 蒙石 for manganese. In 1871, Chinese scientist Xu Shou and British translator John Fryer introduced one-character element names pairing 金, the metal marker, with a sound component; 錳 pairs 金 with 孟. Education standards retained the system by 1908.
鋰, 鎂, and 鋁 follow the same metal-plus-sound pattern.
Technical; used in Chinese chemistry and materials writing.

1Why does 錳 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
