What 鍝 means
It names an object; 鐻鍝 narrows it to an ear ornament.
Du Du's Eastern Han passage, preserved in Hou Hanshu, describes 鐻鍝 as metal ornaments hung from pierced ears. The Ministry of Education's 2024 entry says Shuowen does not record 鍝; the 6th-century Yupian later glosses it as a saw.
Together 鐻鍝 names the ornament, so lone 鍝 is not the word for earring. In the 20th-century Korean royal name 李鍝, 鍝 works as a name character, not an object gloss.
Historical and lexicographic; it is not a casual chat symbol.
Do not use 鍝 alone as a modern synonym for “earring”; that reading belongs to 鐻鍝.

Questions people ask
1Why does 鍝 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
