What 鍯 means
It refers either to a hollowing chisel or to a bell’s sound.
The early Chinese character dictionary 《說文解字》 was completed in 100 CE and revised through 121 CE. Its entry is under 鏓, with 鍯 listed as a variant.
The chisel hollows wood. A second gloss gives a bell sound. Ma Rong’s Eastern Han poem 《長笛賦》 (“Rhapsody on the Long Flute”) uses 鏓 in a passage about making a bamboo flute. Later glosses differ: 平木 means “level wood,” while 中木 suggests “bore into wood”; the second fits the tool’s action.
What does 鍯 mean in a message?
A bare 鍯 does not reveal which sense is intended.
Wood, bamboo, or flute-making words point to the chisel; bell or ringing words point to the sound. With neither cue, ask the sender what they mean.
As a text character, its displayed form depends on the receiving font.
