What 鎖 means
A lock, a chain, or the act of locking something shut.
An appended entry in 說文解字, an early Chinese character dictionary, defines it as an iron door lock. A Japanese dictionary cites this sense in うつほ物語, a tale dated around 970–999.
Taiwan's Ministry of Education also records chain, restraint, closure, veiling, furrowed brows, and sewing stitches as senses.

Questions people ask
1Why does 鎖 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
